Review of the Hunter 25_73-83 by Ed Pare'

Year built 1981
Location of boat Chicago, IL
The boat is sailed on The Great Lakes
How the boat is used Weekends and longer
Normal wind strength 16-22 knots
Average size of crew 2-4
Liveaboard?
Owner bought the boat in 1998
If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? Yes. I would turn the clock back further and buy it earlier, if I could!
Gear that's been added Genoa roller furling (Harken). Mainsail shaping controls led aft to cockpit.
Structural or complex improvements None needed.
The boat's best features Very easy to sail, roomy enough to stay below for as long as we like, good ventilation, plenty of storage.
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. Cockpit drain hose comes off too easily and is extremely difficult to reach. Roomy gascan ledge makes it hard to reach outboard motor. Overlong port setee/berth robs cubic space from what should be port cockpit lazarette. Need thruhull with petcock for bilge pump and icebox drains. Private head robs V berth headroom.
Sailing characterisitcs I don't understand it, but helm is always virtually neutral, one or two sails, light or heavy air. I can take my hand off the tiller and will just stay there (no friction, either). As waves get higher,
Motoring characterisitcs We have a Johnson 9.9 on a SS box-shaped mount. She will reach 5 knots on a flat river, 3.5-4 on the lake. Not very agile but good enough to power through the chop at the harbor entrance.
Liveability Galley counter space is smallish, but the two-burner stove allows for two hot courses to go with our salads and sandwiches. I might jury-rig an electric pump for water to allow two-handed dish washing. Folding table is big enough for four, center cabin is as comfy as anyone might want. Forward V-berth is cramped - I pity tall people here.
The owner's experience in dealing with Hunter (if any) N/A
The owner's experience with the boat dealer or broker, if any Crowley's yard in Chicago are good people. Refreshingly honest and no B.S.
