Review of the Hunter 25_73-83 by Valentino L. Lovisa

Year built 1981
Location of boat New Orleans, LA
The boat is sailed on Lakes
How the boat is used Day sailing
Normal wind strength 10-15 knots
Average size of crew 2-4
Liveaboard?
Owner bought the boat in 1981
If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? No. The size and lack of user friendly features became increasinly obvious as my experience level increased.
Gear that's been added Roller furling, heavier lifelines with Pelican hooks, Dodger, Bimini, heavier O/B bracket, Marine head w/ holding tank, Whale foot pump forgalley, storm jib.
Structural or complex improvements All masthead wiring thru mast insulated to reducenoise. Shroud U bolts backed with aluminum metalreinforcers below deck for safety and strength.
The boat's best features Lots of portlights for ventilation
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. The lack of chain plates reduced my confidence in the boat in heavy air. The toe rail leaks nomatter what. The galley ice box had no drainage. The hull blistered the first month in the water. Hunter does not have replacement parts for thetiller mount and rudder post spacer.
Sailing characterisitcs Very tender. Difficult to motor in heavy seabecause of position of outboard bracket even with deep shaft 9.9. Reefing early makes for amuch nicer experience. Light air sailing performance is exceptional.
Motoring characterisitcs As stated above, in short chop with a 15kt or greater head wind, there is no way I can leave the harbor. Using the motor and tiller makes for precise manuvering in tight spaces.
Liveability Weekend for two, no more.
The owner's experience in dealing with Hunter (if any) The customer service have been polite, helpful and apologetic.
The owner's experience with the boat dealer or broker, if any The dealer is no longer in business. Enough said.
