Review of the Hunter 31_83-87 by Jeff Houseman

Year built 1986
Location of boat Riverside, NJ
The boat is sailed on Rivers
How the boat is used Weekends and longer
Normal wind strength 10-15 knots
Average size of crew 2-4
Liveaboard? No
Owner bought the boat in Fork
If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? Yes. I have found it easy to sail and points well. The living spaces make it a great family cruiser.
Gear that's been added Hard boom vang. The original boom vang had been removed when I bought it.
Structural or complex improvements
The boat's best features Living spaces lend themselves nicely to weekending on the boat.
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. The biggest draw back is that it doesn't back worth a flip. Also, drainage from the engine compartment down to the main bilge could be better. I will be adding a dripless stuffing box over the winter. That should solve that. Other owners have complained about the maintenance required to keep the bilges from smelling.
Sailing characterisitcs The boat sails best in 10 to 15 knot wind. It gets a little tender in winds over 18 knots and should reduce sail. In winds over 25 I found that I need to double reef the main and shorten the roller furling considerably to settle things down.
Motoring characterisitcs The 16 horse Yanmar is not enough. The boat is very much underpowered. But, it still gets you there when the wind dies.
Liveability Very good. Plenty of room down below. However, I would have liked a slightly larger cockpit.
The owner's experience in dealing with Hunter (if any) N/A
The owner's experience with the boat dealer or broker, if any The broker was very knowledgable and helpful. I would definately deal with them again.
