Review of the Hunter 30_88-94 by Donald Riha

Year built 1989
Location of boat Detroit, Michigan
The boat is sailed on The Great Lakes
How the boat is used Day sailing
Normal wind strength 10-15 knots
Average size of crew 2-4
Liveaboard?
Owner bought the boat in 1994
If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? Yes, but with some reservation.
Gear that's been added Fully battened main and lazy jacks, remote fuel gauge, hour meter, battery meter, wheel brake
Structural or complex improvements no
The boat's best features Sails well and is stable, cabin is bright and well laid out, lots of storage, lots of room in the cockpit
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. Poor engine access, especially to bleed injector lines, access panels are not where pumps and thru hulls are, round galley sinks too small, location of fuel gauge is poor, engine shut off should be near wheel and not in cabin, keel joint cracking is problem.
Sailing characterisitcs Boat is stable and easy to sail. Need to reef a lot as wind increases due to tall rig. Sails well and fast with just reefed main in 20-25 knot winds.
Motoring characterisitcs 6 to 6.25 k with 2 blade prop, backs down with reasonable control. Engine is noisy and transmits vibrattion more than expected.
Liveability Have not lived onboard.
The owner's experience in dealing with Hunter (if any) Have not dealt directly with Hunter.
The owner's experience with the boat dealer or broker, if any Purchased boat used from a local dealer. They were excellent and still provide good service and are helpful.
