Review of the Hunter 30_88-94 by Tom

Year built 1990
Location of boat Northpoint Marina, IL
The boat is sailed on The Great Lakes
How the boat is used Day sailing
Normal wind strength 10-15 knots
Average size of crew 2-4
Liveaboard? No
Owner bought the boat in 2006
If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? Absolutely. My wife and I looked at approximately 30 boats, both new and used, prior to purchasing. The 1990 Hunter 30 offered the most boat for the money.
Gear that's been added pedestal guard, autohelm, wind system (near future)
Structural or complex improvements As with any used boat, we had a thorough survey completed. Basic engine check up. Rigging tunned. Aft locker bulkhead repaired. Fuel line and filter replaced. This was done by our boat yard. The mandatory repairs, which were noted on our survey, were paid for by the seller. New bottom paint by us. Boat was in great shape when purchased.
The boat's best features Again, boat was well taken care of. Cabin space is great. Very livable boat for family of four for weekends. Excellent cabin layout. Better than some of the new boats we looked at.
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. 3 things which could have been designed differently are the engine cut off pull, anchor roller, and below deck hood furler. The engine stop is located on top of the engine compartment. You have to reach through the companion way to stop the engine. Hood roller furling is stiff even with proper service. Location of furling system prevents intended use of anchor roller. Personally, I feel these are minor issues.
Sailing characterisitcs Sails great in 10-15 knots. Have learned to reef earlier when winds stronger. Boat sails better with less heel. Points well. Very stable boat. Wife and I feel very safe aboard in stroger wind conditions.
Motoring characterisitcs Motors well in calm seas. Easy to reach hull speed. Motoring less efficient in windy/wavy conditions.
Liveability Great liveability. As mentioned earlier, cabin layout is excellent. Better than most new boats we looked at. Rear berth nice and open. Great for the clausterphobic sailor.
The owner's experience in dealing with Hunter (if any) Have not had the need.
The owner's experience with the boat dealer or broker, if any Bought from a broker. Larsen Marine in Waukegan,IL. Experience was very pleasant. The broaker was very honest and helpfull. Boat purchase went smoothly. Larsen Marine as a whole has been great. From boat storage to service.
Other comments Over the years I have heard many comments about how poorly the Hunters have been built. I would tend to disagree. Our boat is very stable, safe, and looks good for its vintage. It is a very affordable boat for those of us who simply want to enjoy sailing.
