Owner bought the boat in 2009
If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? Yes. After much research and looking at other boats at boatshows over a few years we saw this boat as the most comfortable and practical boat to enjoy our retirement on.
Gear that's been added The boat came with the Mariners Package and we also opted for most of its extra's. We have added a remote anchor system that tells you how much rode you have out. An extra anchor with 60m of chain. A deck wash down system. General purpose spinnaker. TV frame to allow the TV to be moved and locked so you can watch it in the comfort of the starboard settee. Various hooks and towel rails. A key safe and digital safe. A dinghy with an electric torqeedo motor. A power dive unit. Two stainless steel 5.2kg gas bottles. An extra 200amp hour battery, which makes 3 altogether. Changed the AIS receiver to a transponder.
Structural or complex improvements Davit. A super wind 350 wind generator. Two solar panels on top of the davit. With all associated controlling and monitoring equipment. Two fibre glass storage boxes in stainless steel brackets attached to the back of the aft storage locker. A general purpose table between the two storage bins over the aft hatch which folds up. A Catalina BBQ which feeds off the boats LP gas system. Installed an Ericsson communications unit for phone and internet access with ariel on top cross tree.
The boat's best features It is comfortable and easy to Liveaboard. Sails surprisingly well for a floating caravan. Have had it up to 6 knots with main and spinnaker on a broadreach with wind speed only 12 knots.
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. As with most new boats we have had our fair share of teething problems of which all have been resolved except one. That is the washing machine which in all fairness is not made by Hunter. We have a Splendide Comb-o-matic 6200 which fits very neatly and uses little water. But after its first few loads it decides to go on fault mode when it goes into either rinse, spin, dry or just when it is finished. We are still trying to sort out the problem.
Sailing characterisitcs We have no problems with just the two of us sailing the boat. The auto helm and electric winch makes life a lot easier. The inmast furling system works well and allows you to put out as much or as little sail as needed. We have yet to be hit by heavy winds and have only sailed in winds of 0 to 20 knots.
Motoring characterisitcs We have had no problems with the Yanmar 75hp. Starts first go every time and quite efficient at around 2400 to 2600RPM. Full throttle gives around 7kts.
Liveability As this is our home we have set it up as so. To this end we have not been out of the marina for any extended trips. That will be happening in a couple of months when cyclone season has finished. We have found whether in the Marina or the few times we have been away at anchor we are able to enjoy all the comforts of modern living.
The owner's experience in dealing with Hunter (if any)
The owner's experience with the boat dealer or broker, if any We bought the boat through the Australian agency Sydney by Sail. We have found their service and information helpful when we have needed it. We did find however that the handover was a bit much to take in in the time they allowed.
Other comments This is our first Hunter our previous being Catalina's and a Dufour. We have found our Hunter well presented and a very liveable boat. It is also still comfortable when it is handling the children and grandchildren which can lift the boats numbers to 9.
