Review of the Hunter 30_74-83 by digbysailor

Year built 1978
Location of boat nova scotia
The boat is sailed on Bays, sounds, or protected salt water
How the boat is used Day sailing
Normal wind strength 10-15 knots
Average size of crew 2-4
Liveaboard? No
Owner bought the boat in 2009
If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? yes,it was within my budget and I like my boat
Gear that's been added not yet but i plan to as soon as the boat has been reconditioned.
Structural or complex improvements starting at the bilge I replaced the factory steel 8 inch i beam that supports the compression post with one fabed from stainless steel.wasnt cheap but it will be there forever and it will eliminate the unsigntly rust stains in my bilge.i also cut a channel in my compression post to run a i inch conduit for wiring which runs from the mast step to the bilge.By doing this i eliminated three potential places where water can enter my deck.I also had a piece of stainless fabed to have under my step to attach blocks to for routing halyards/lines aft.this also helps me eliminate the need for standing blocks fastened through the deck and another entrance source for moisture.I recored the area around my step while I was doing all this and it looks better than new.I purchased an 18 hp deisel to replace the 12 the boat came with because with the tides we experience here it is just not sufficient.I replaced the shaft with a ss shaft, packing gland with a new dripless seal, two bladed prop was replaced with a three.I fabed a large offset binnacle guard and am in the process of moving the electrical system to a spot above the nav desk. There is no end to the work on this boat but when I am done I will have a boat that I know inside and out and will have gained lots of useful knowledge.
The boat's best features Well...I find for an older boat the boat has beam.I like that Im not a hard core racer and i like a beamy roomy boat and this boat is definitely beamy and has a decent layout though dated.I like hot and cold running water and the shower.the galley sink is deep which is a good feature, cavernous bilge is good, boat is very easy to handle.Soloing is a cinch in normal conditions and i dont even have my lines run aft yet or a furler.
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. Engine is too small hp wise.i beam should not be made of iron, engine compartment is way under soundproofed water lays in spots in the cockpit where it should be diverted off, electrical panel and main switch are in an akward spot, water heater is removable only by removing the galley counter/top/sink/icebox.topside leaks are numerous but i would expect that on any boat that is 15 plus years old, those problems are being adressed.
Sailing characterisitcs the best
Motoring characterisitcs way way way too underpowered and sever prop walk in reverse.other than that the ysb12 is very reliable.
Liveability excellent for 2 ppl would like a larger aft berth
The owner's experience in dealing with Hunter (if any) never have dealt with them
The owner's experience with the boat dealer or broker, if any got what i paid for
Other comments lots send me an email.....i love my boat
