Review of the Hunter 19 by Robert Pontius

Year built 1993
Location of boat Canyon Lake, Texas
The boat is sailed on Lakes
How the boat is used Weekends and longer
Normal wind strength 10-15 knots
Average size of crew
Liveaboard? No
Owner bought the boat in 1999
If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? Absolutely!
Gear that's been added 1)Some wide, hard rubber steps to the swim ladder. Otherwise the bare tubing "kills" your feet. 2)An adjustible bracket to keep the forward hatch open at different angles. Works like an air scoop for hot Texas nights and yet can be lowered when there is a bit too much breeze.
Structural or complex improvements None

Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc.
Sailing characterisitcs Good handling generally. Tends to round up in strong winds (15-20mph). My 1st mate is very sensitive to heeling, so the initial tenderness of the water ballast gave her fits until we'd had a bit of strong wind sailing and heeled to 15 to 20 degrees with no porblems. Now, unless she is really paying attention we can cruise along, heeled 15 degrees and I don't get any complaints that "we're going to tip over!"
Motoring characterisitcs I have a 4-hp Mercury standard shaft and it tends to come up out of the water in even small waves; particularly in following seas. I have to get crew to the starboard stern to keep the prob in the water. This is a problem usually because this is just the time the 1st mate needs to be forward to get the jib/main down or up. I will solve this soon with a new Honda 4-stroke long shaft!
Liveability It works for two for weekends and 3-4 day trips where marinas are available occasionally for buying ice and dumping the porta-pottie. The so called "galley" we use only for the alcohol stove to heat water for coffee or to warmup soup or canned food. The porta-potti we put out in the limited cabin floorspace at night because we find the v-berth more comfortable for sleeping because of the forward hatch than the aft berth. If we don't move the head out at night, we'd have to tear up the bed every time we needed to use it...
The owner's experience in dealing with Hunter (if any) I have not had any direct dealings with Hunter.
The owner's experience with the boat dealer or broker, if any I bought the boat used, but through a Hunter dealer and was pleased with his help and explanations. He even tooks us for a test sail and showed us the "ropes."
Other comments It is a great compromise for a couple or even maybe a family with small kids who want a cabin and a reasonable weekend camper. We love the boat and can pull it on the trailer with a mini-van because of the water ballast.
