Review of the Hunter 280 by Steve Rotfeld

Year built 1996
Location of boat Chicago - Burnham harbor
The boat is sailed on The Great Lakes
How the boat is used Day sailing
Normal wind strength 10-15 knots
Average size of crew 2-4
Liveaboard?
Owner bought the boat in 1996
If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? Without a seconds hesitation - This has been a great mid size "starter" boat.
Gear that's been added Auto pilot - GPS chartploter - second battery and charger - cd/am/fm stereo with cabin and cockpit speakers - lazy jacks - Harken mast track and Batcars for main sail - knotmeter, wind indicator, depth sounder
Structural or complex improvements none
The boat's best features easy to sail single handed - good speed - great cockpit and cabin layout
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. radio should have been placed in cockpit
Sailing characterisitcs a little flakey downwind - otherwise boat has good acceleration and great handling under normal conditions
Motoring characterisitcs power more then enough - goes very well in reverse 6 knots no problem
Liveability weekend only for 2 people and a dog
The owner's experience in dealing with Hunter (if any) n/a
The owner's experience with the boat dealer or broker, if any dealer was GREAT - Darfin Yachts in Chicago - unfortunatley, he dropped franchise shortly after we purchased boat - but the few minor service problems we had were taken care of AT ONCE - Hunter does not currently have a Chicago dealer(unbelievable) nearest one is in Racine Wisconsin with a branch office in the suburbs - this will def. play a role in the purchase of our next boat.
