Review of the Hunter 28 by Scott Shucher

Year built 1992
Location of boat South Yarmouth, MA
The boat is sailed on Bays, sounds, or protected salt water
How the boat is used Weekends and longer
Normal wind strength 10-15 knots
Average size of crew solo
Liveaboard?
Owner bought the boat in 1992
If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? Yes, In six seasons so fay I have not seen another 28 foot sailboat I'd rather have.
Gear that's been added Harken bocks on the mainsheet make trimming so much easier. Furlex roller furling. Gennaker w/winch
Structural or complex improvements Nothing that would alter the original design.
The boat's best features The boat is so easy to singlehand. The jib winches are right by the wheel. I can easily lock down the wheel whenever the breeze is abeam or forward of that point and she's nicley balanced so that I've never felt the need for an autopilot. Accomondations are good for a 28 footer. We've actually slept 6 aboard on an overnight. But generally we'll spend up to a week or so with 2 or 3 and a child.
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. The building technique on the 28 is the same as Hunter's bigger boats. It's nice to know that this boat is built the same way their forty footers are built.
Sailing characterisitcs Because of the tall rig she is a little tender. Best reults are to reef the main around 15 knts, the roll in some jib around 20 knots or put some crew on the rail. She really flies off the wind with an asymetrical, but directly downwind can still be slow.
Motoring characterisitcs The 18hp Yanmar is plenty of power. She powered me home from Block Island in 25knots of breeze on the nose and a short steep chop, repeatedly burying the bow and sending a torrent of water down the decks. She made a nice 4.2 to 4.5 knots the whole trip. I've never quite gotten the knack of backing down with a 2 blade fixed prop.
Liveability We regularly spend weekends. And several times a summer, a week or more on board. We've been doing that the last four years with a baby. The aft cabin makes a great
The owner's experience in dealing with Hunter (if any) They've always been helpful.
The owner's experience with the boat dealer or broker, if any The dealer was good, but after a previous bad experience with another dealer, I had $$ held in escrow until the boat was delivered and commissioned as per the purchase agreement.
