Review of the Hunter 28 by Larry Bechard

Year built 1992
Location of boat West end of Lake Erie
The boat is sailed on The Great Lakes
How the boat is used Day sailing
Normal wind strength 10-15 knots
Average size of crew solo
Liveaboard? No
Owner bought the boat in 2001
If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? Yes, There is no perfect boat. But this boat certainly satisfies most of my needs and I have no complaints.
Gear that's been added Auto pilot
Structural or complex improvements The toughest thing we had to do was replace the holding tank. This required cutting a hole in the rear bulkhead to gain access. Even with that, it took a contortionist ( not me )to make the swap.
The boat's best features I love the appearance of the this Hunter vintage. The cockpit is very comfortable. I like the amount of ports and natural light in the cabin. Certainly the 3'-9" draft, since we sail in the West end of Lake Erie
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. Holding tank. Hunter should not have used aluminum.
Sailing characterisitcs I feel the boat handles well in all points of sail. With the oversized rig you need to reef early to eliminate the weather helm. It doesn't affect speed it just makes you feel a little wimpy because you can not keep all your canvass up like the other guys. The upside is it provides great light wind performance.
Motoring characterisitcs Works great. You just need to be cognizant of prop walk when docking.
Liveability Really haven't had a chance to experience it since I mostly daysail. I feel Hunter as achieved a good balance in a 28' boat. I wish there was more dry storage ( somehere I am comfortable storing bedding and clothing)
The owner's experience in dealing with Hunter (if any) The couple times I contacted them for information they have been helpful.
The owner's experience with the boat dealer or broker, if any
Other comments I think it is a great boat serving my needs. I don't feel a compelling need to upgrade or replace it. I suspect that is a pretty good testimonial. (don't tell my wife, I want to keep my options open)
