Review of the Hunter 27_75-84 by Hugh Radkins

Year built 1984
Location of boat Columbia River
The boat is sailed on Bays, sounds, or protected salt water
How the boat is used Day sailing
Normal wind strength 10-15 knots
Average size of crew solo
Liveaboard? No
Owner bought the boat in 2004
If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? Yes
Gear that's been added New VHF, masthead wind sensor, autohelm
Structural or complex improvements Boat has 1992 3cyl. 18hp Perkins, plenty of smoother quieter power--big selling point to us.
The boat's best features Seems like a very sound strong boat. For 27' great room and amenities--roomy v-berth, real head, decent NAV desk, great icebox-except the drain.
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. Outboard shrouds limit sheeting angles but there are no chainplate holes to worry about. A mainsheet traveller and jib lead tracks would friendly up the sail trimming. Deeper well for the bilgepump to sit in would dry the slop better. Why drain the icebox to the bilge--if it weren't for that, my bilge would be dusty.
Sailing characterisitcs Carina really jumps up and goes with just a touch of wind and she really goes when the Cruising chute goes up. I don't have a 'pointing' angle but I think she goes pretty high despite the outboard shrouds--If you have to point use the 110, don't mess with the Genoa and sheet it in tight. Plenty of weather helm but I may have more rig tuning to do. I reef early and it only helps with no speed lost. More sail trimming features would have been nice.
Motoring characterisitcs No real unexpected problems, plenty of propwalk in reverse and if the wind is against you, don't fight it.
Liveability Roomy enough for us but it is only 27. Icebox works well, the alchohol stove is easy and effective, I don't understand all the bellyacheing. The v-berth is great with the headroom, opening ports and hatch, the head is 'private' with ventilation and the quarterberth is a very roomy single. Sure I'd love a guest cabin-next boat.
The owner's experience in dealing with Hunter (if any) No dealings.
The owner's experience with the boat dealer or broker, if any Private seller purchase.
Other comments I don't think they make them like they use to.
