Review of the Hunter 25.5 by Jack Krasney

Year built 1989
Location of boat Lake Erie, Buffalo Small Boat Harbor
The boat is sailed on The Great Lakes
How the boat is used Day sailing
Normal wind strength 10-15 knots
Average size of crew 2-4
Liveaboard?
Owner bought the boat in 1989
If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? Yes, the boat was, and has, been appropriate for my sailing needs and interests. It was great when the kids were smaller and allows easy single handing when I was short of a crew. We have enjoyed day sailing and racing. More recently we are doing more extended cruising for long weekends up to two weeks.
Gear that's been added Spinnaker gear and cruising spinnaker tackle. Most of the time I use the cruising spinnaker and the boat is very responsive with that. I have thought about roller furling but haven't found it necessary. I usually keep the 110 jib in a head sail bag and on rare occasions I use the 150 Genoa. We also bought a boat tent which fits on the boom and expands the weekend and cruising living space.
Structural or complex improvements No
The boat's best features Ease of sailing, rigging design, ease of single handing. I like the traveler across the entrance to the hatch as it is easily accessible instead of being on top of the cabin although the main sheet gets in the way in going through the hatch. Its a fairly quick and responsive boat.
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. The Tohatsu motor has had its problems in particular since parts are not readily available locally. However, I found a good mechanic who keeps it in great shape. The remote cockpit controls are prone to wear and need to be watched.
Sailing characterisitcs Comfortable boat to sail, responsive. However, it is soft in a heavy wind so that one has to release the sheet and traveler a bit more than one would anticipate having to do. Very nice boat to race with adequate crew.
Motoring characterisitcs Motors quite well except the prop comes out of the water in a chop.
Liveability The boat is great for a weekend. We've cruised for a couple of weeks and then it is rather tight. The accomodations are simple and somewhat spartan. The absence of a holding tank means that one doesn't have to worry about dumping it. We have found the porta potti adequate.
The owner's experience in dealing with Hunter (if any) Hunter has be superb. Very helpful with all questions and advice.
The owner's experience with the boat dealer or broker, if any The dealer I dealt with was less than adequate. Undependable. The upside was I learned to do a lot of things myself which is a clear bonus.
