Review of the Hunter 25 by Michael Tullio

Year built 1985
Location of boat atlantic city nj
The boat is sailed on Open ocean
How the boat is used Day sailing
Normal wind strength 10-15 knots
Average size of crew 2-4
Liveaboard? No
Owner bought the boat in 2006
If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? Yes, absolutely. this is the first boat that i have ever owned. it is in my opinion the perfect vessel for a first time owner.
Gear that's been added the previous owner who is my best friend, added numerous upgrades to the boat. gas grill, new honda 15 hp outboard with extra long shaft, tv,dvd player, microwave, stereo cd player inside and out. head potty with electric assisted pump.
Structural or complex improvements head potty was installed in the mid cabin portion leading to the V-berth
The boat's best features ease of handling, sea-worthiness is excellent in rough waters, the cock-pit is roomy enough to work all sheets for head-sail and main by the skipper when solo sailing. the cabin ceiling is not very high (about 5'7") but the cabin is split into a private V-berth/head area with locking door and main cabin area with two bunks and small galley/refrigerator. it is laid out very nicely for a small boat, and is comfortable enough for two people (3 at most)for 2 to 3 day extended stays at anchorage.
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. its an older boat, so normal wear and tear occurs. things like shackles and turnbuckles break. wiring corrodes and needs replacement from time to time. and rainwater finds its way into the bilge from various places.
Sailing characterisitcs The boat is not exceptionally fast (top speed about 6.5 knots) but is very stable. she likes to heel a bit when on a close haul. loss of speed is, i believe attributed to the larger 4 stroke outboard motor, and some of the modifications in the cabin. the boat handles higher seas very well and is very smooth in choppy swells
Motoring characterisitcs have done extensive power sailing on longer trips, due to finicky southern new jersey winds. the boat handles extremely well when under power. i steer by use of a tiller wheel, which makes life very easy when navigating in channels anchorage areas and home port.
Liveability the boat is set up to sleep four persons. realistically she has slender beam, and the cabin would be very tight for four persons. my wife (first mate) and i have comfortably spent up to 3 days at a time on the boat, while visiting other anchorages. i would not take more than one other person on extended trips but could manage a fourth person on short overnight runs. the amenities on the boat are quite nice though and it is a ton of fun hanging out .
The owner's experience in dealing with Hunter (if any) n/A
The owner's experience with the boat dealer or broker, if any n/A
Other comments I would recommend this boat to anyone that is just getting started. I attended a 3-day professionally run sailing school prior to skippering my boat, and have enjoyed hours and hours of sailing. i racked up close to 400 sailing miles in this boat during 2007, and even sailed in January of 2008 due to mild local weather.
