Review of the Hunter 25 by KennyH

Year built 1981
Location of boat Elizabeth City
The boat is sailed on Bays, sounds, or protected salt water
How the boat is used Weekends and longer
Normal wind strength 10-15 knots
Average size of crew 2-4
Liveaboard? No
Owner bought the boat in 2004
If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? Definitely. I owned larger boats before this one and I love the design and have found it able to do all I want with little maintenance
Gear that's been added It came with most of the gear I needed. I added a boat hook, CQR 20lb anchor and rode, and a few very minior items.
Structural or complex improvements Yes the rudder bearing was broken at below the tiller and it was made by a local machine shop and I replaced it myself. The teak underneath it was damaged and I replace the damaged area. The previous owner made the hatch boards of plywood and I have purchased teak to replace them this year.
The boat's best features Easy to sail singlehanded. Easy to maintain. Looks great siting at the dock or sailing. Love the bimini top. Dry as a bone. Love the 8 opening ports. Sails great with autohelm 1000. Great anchor locker. 2 feet 11 inch shoal draft is perfect for eastern North Carolina rivers and sounds.
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. The water tank filler is in the starboard locker and it is impossible to fill without getting water in the locker and bilge. I will be moving the filler to the cockpit this year. Just a poor design in my opinion. Starting the outboard with pull starter is a little difficult to get in the right position due to cockpit design.
Sailing characterisitcs Moves easly in very light air. Feels like a much larger boat in 15-20 knot winds.
Motoring characterisitcs Motors easily with a 9.9 Evinrude and seems to steer easily to back it in my slip. I don't motor much and sometimes sail into my slip just for the fun of it.
Liveability Seems to be fine for just wife and me and that is usually the case most of the time. Friends on board for day sails have had no complaints with up to 5 onboard.
The owner's experience in dealing with Hunter (if any) Never had to contact hunter.
The owner's experience with the boat dealer or broker, if any Bought from local owner.
Other comments I think it is an ideal boat for a person that usually sails alone or with a spouse. I think even three people can be comfortable on it. It ask for very little in return, making it a great boat.
