Review of the Hunter 170 by Marshall Galliers

Year built 2001
Location of boat St. Louis MO
The boat is sailed on Lakes
How the boat is used Racing
Normal wind strength 10-15 knots
Average size of crew 2-4
Liveaboard? No
Owner bought the boat in 2002
If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? Yes. I often sail on the Mississippi River and its grate for sailing in moderate to high wind. A bit slow for racing but competitive.
Gear that's been added Motor mount and 2 hp honda is great back up for long day sailing. Cushions well worth expense and make day shorter.
Structural or complex improvements None
The boat's best features Furling Jib is very helpful when gusts come up. Open stern is very easy for swiming from boat. Large cockpit area good for more than two people.
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. Some cracks in Hull had to be repaired after five seasons some caused by dropping objects like anchor some stress related.
Sailing characterisitcs Boat handles well in all conditions and is more stable than most other day sailers. Can take large waves on Mississippi.
Motoring characterisitcs Longest with outboar 6 miles against high wind coming down narrow channel. Did fine but had to shift weight forward.
Liveability Good for day trips
The owner's experience in dealing with Hunter (if any) Generally helful other than sail tuning
The owner's experience with the boat dealer or broker, if any Local dealer staff very helful and capable
Other comments It has great curb and water appeal with open transom and attractive features. I get a lot of positive comments and inquiry about unique and appealing look of this boat.
