Review of the Hunter 170 by B.J. Neeley

Year built 1965
Location of boat Athens, Al
The boat is sailed on Lakes
How the boat is used Day sailing
Normal wind strength 10-15 knots
Average size of crew 2-4
Liveaboard? No
Owner bought the boat in 2001
If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? NO!!! Within one year of purchase the boat developed cracks in the transom, the floor of the bow storage area and around the mast fitting. I contacted Hunter and they suggested sealing the cracks with Plastic Weld. This resulted in a repair that looks like spider webs. I think there is a design problem with this model boat. The deck material at the transon is about 1/16" inch thick. I now have a boat worth about 1/2 normal arket price. Hunter should have replaced the boat.
Gear that's been added
Structural or complex improvements Because of cracks I had to reinforce the transom with 1/2" Seaboard.
The boat's best features Easy to sail and carries 3-4 people with no problem.
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. Cracks in the deck and transom have caused major problems.
Sailing characterisitcs
Motoring characterisitcs I have a 2hp Yamaha that pushed the boat nicely
Liveability N/A
The owner's experience in dealing with Hunter (if any) Very friendly people, they responded promply but did not fix my problem.
The owner's experience with the boat dealer or broker, if any The dealer was great to work with, but stopped handling Hunter after I bough the boat.
Other comments Overall design of the boat is great, it is easy to sail and look good. If the boat were built out of better material it would be a great boat.
