Rudder Lock

posted 10-07-2008 by Rick Webb

The tiller on this series of boats is a hollow aluminum tube that will wallow out at the bolt securing it to the rudder especially when the rudder is held in place with the tiller.

Here is the other end at the motor mount. The white cable is a piece of life line with a loop at either end that passes through the pivot tube and around the motor mount with a brass padlock to secure it. If you rely on locking your outboard using the levers on the pads that secure the motor to the mount you may find it missing one day they are very easy to break off.

I also removed the lock nut and the bolt that attaches to the rudder. Replaced Them with a wing nut and a locking wire on a longer bolt whose threads do not cut into the rudder or the tiller and so that I can detach the tiller and gain more room in the cockpit.

I used pintals and gudgeons from West Marine to attach the teak block on either side. This is almost what they were designed for and I figured they would hold up a vey long time.
