Stopping fuel vent overflow

posted 09-12-2008 by John Meyer

To minimize the possibility of fuel overflow through the vent line when filling, I made the following changes. 1) I cut the vent line and added 6 inches of Pyrex glass tubing to act as a sight glass. I positioned this sight glass between the transformers in the aft starboard stern locker. (Blue Arrow) When I fuel fill, I first open the lid to the locker and when I near full, I watch the tube. When I see fuel in the tube, I immediately stop filling. Running the engine for 15 minutes after filling assures that enough fuel has been used to empty out any that is in the sight glass. 2) Just in case there is an overflow due to inattention or thermal expansion, I have installed a Racor, LG100 Fuel/Air separator directly above the sight glass. (Red Arrow). This eliminates any possibility of fuel overflow through the fuel vent discharge.
