Fuel Filter Modification

posted 09-12-2008 by John Meyer

The factory fuel filter install is very difficult to get at. It required me to unbolt the filter from the starboard bulkhead of the engine and pull it back as far as the hoses would reach in order to unscrew and change the spin-on filter. This was unacceptable as filter changes often are required under way - Ive learned from experience, . I replaced the original filter with a 500 Turbine series which has a drop in cartridge from the top. These filters are 40% of the cost vs. the spin on type. During the filter change and relocation, I also added in and out ball valves to isolate the filter so I dont have to bleed the engine after a change. I also added a bypass valve so I can keep the engine running while I change the filter if necessary ( I still have another 2 micron filter on the engine). Location is now under the engine cover in the aft stateroom and I can check/drain water from the filter very easy. I debate about the plastic bowl vs. a metal bowl. Legally, if the filter is in the engine compartment you must have a metal bowl or a metal cup over the bowl. However, I wanted plastic so I could view the condition of my fuel. After much investigation, I opted for the plastic. I will add a metal protection cup shortly just for piece of mind but the 38s do have the auto fire extinguisher which should solve the fire problem and Racor says the plastic they use will melt long after the fuel hoses have.
