Hunter 23 traveler mod

posted 10-07-2008 by Peter Suah

Unbolt the track from the boat and remove the stock spring-loaded pins that normally hold the traveler in position. Keep the track and the stock car, unless you want to spend almost $200 on a six-wheel car with a stand-up fitting that wont work any better.

Two Harken single sheaves with beckets are bolted to the car with a Wichard bow shackle (get one with a captive pin). This leaves enough room to attach the mainsheet tackle; a snap shackle here is worth the expense if you trailer the boat.

The end sheaves with built-in cam cleats are bolted on top of the track at its ends. Replace the four bolts at the track ends with new bolts that are 1/2-inch longer. About 35 feet of 3/8-inch line is needed to rig this properly with enough slack to control the traveler from either coaming of the cockpit. Fasten to the becket of each car sheave with a buntline hitch to save room.

Overview of modified traveler

Note bow shackle, single sheaves with beckets (ball-bearing sheaves are worth the extra expense) and the buntline hitch at each becket.

The ends are a matched pair; port and starboard and bolt on to the top of the track. Mask carefully to avoid mess from caulk when replacing the track and make sure not to caulk the drain holes at the dge of the companionway.
