Swing Keel Repair

posted 09-12-2008 by John Ross

A lot of questions have been asked about the swing keel and how to restore it. The swing keel has a nylon bushing and stainless shaft assembly that requires replacement. The replacement of the bushing is best done with the keel removed from the boat. Removing the keel requires lifting the boat as it will not come out with the boat on the standard Magic Tilt trailer. With the keel laid flat sand on one side to remove the fiberglass exposing the 1 1/8 diameter 2 1/4 long nylon bushing. Flip the board over and with a pinch inside the 1/2 pivot hole pound out the bushing. The bushing is fitted into an internal three inch diameter nylon block mounted within the foam cored keel. I replaced my bushing with one made from brass but if you sail in salt water, a better choice would be nylon. Re-glass the open side of the keel around the new bushing. Assemble the keel to the boat using a new shaft, bolts, washers, nuts and 5200 Adhesive/sealant under the mounting angles. I also added a cone shaped rubber washer between the hull and the first fender washer in the bilge area to stop possible leaks. The two pictures show how the bushing will wear and in one case the shaft had twisted apart. I also included a drawing of the stainless mounting angles in case you need to replace them. I bought my boat new and have done this replacement once at year 23 of its life. I did however try other fixes like glassing in a copper pipe. And it did last for several years. With the total brass bushing replacement it should last a long time.
