Improved mainsail sheet

posted 10-07-2009 by Patrik Huldt

After a season with the Hunter 356 I felt that the control of the mainsail was not as I was used with from other yachts. All adjustments of the sheet have to be made at the winch far away from the place where the helmsman is standing. When cruising and sailing with only two persons this became a problem for us.

The solution for became as follow:
Put a single block at the foot of the lowest diagonal or the struts. Let the sheet go directly from the mastfoot through the block and then backwards to the arch.

Use a block with clam-cleat and fix it on the arch where the spinnacker-block is supposed to be attached. Now you can stand by the wheel and have full control of the mainsail. I have also improved the handling of the furling jib with a block with a clam-cleam (upper block). See picture enclosed

To reduce the need of power and strength in your arm I also added extra block at the end of the boom, see enclosed picture. We have been sailing or one season with this equipment and the result is very good. Better control when wind suddenly and rapidly incerase, easier to adjust when changing course, and no need for help from the crew when course and changing the mainsheet. A further improvement is tomount a self tailing winch on deck close to the helmsman. The idea came from having seen a lot of yachts with a german sheeting.

Good Luck,

Patrik Huldt, sailing in the archipelago of Stockholm, Sweden
