Our boat has a SS arch that serves many purposes, one of which is where we keep two boat hooks for ready use, port and starboard. As you can see in the photo the base or handle of the hook slides into a short piece of PVC pipe that is zip tied to the base of the forward inboard arch tube. The top part hooks over an arch cross bar. Stays put in all kinds of sea states and ready access when needed.

Starboard boat hook stowed the same way as the sport side. This hook gets the most use and the port side kept more as a spare in the event something happens to the starboard side hook, which has been known to happen.

Only use Garelick brand hooks here. They guarantee their tips for life. Ive broken two so far over the years and they replaced the tips free of charge; easy to replace. Have yet to lose one as they float. Been known to go back and retrieve them from time to time. At 35,000 pounds, no way I can use the hook to stop the boat when grabbing a mooring while the wind is up.
