Arch for Solar Panels and Dinghy

posted 08-30-2011 by James Evans

I added an arch to support 4 85 Watt solar panels and to hoist the dinghy. I wanted to be able to hoist the dinghy in a low position to be able to see over it on the Intercoastal and high when in the ocean to not scoop up water when heeled. There is also a removable crane to hoist a 15 HP dinghy motor.
The picture shows the solar panels and the dinghy in the low position. The dinghy shown is a 10 RIB. There is a rope sleeve on the front edge for a Sunbrella panel that joins the arch to the bimini. The bimini, panel and solar panels provide a lot of shade in the cockpit. The attachment points for the dinghy hoist is on a tube that can be slid out far enough for the dinghy to clear the transome when lowered. This arch was custom made by Atlantic Towers in NJ. It has worked out well and is very strong and stable.
An issue in installing this arch was adding backing plates under the feet of the forward legs of the arch. The only locations I could find with below deck access was where the water an diesel fills were located. I moved these fills further aft and installed the feet with backing plates in their vacated areas.
