Replacing Legend 40.5 Holding Tank

posted 10-07-2008 by Rick Dinon

It was necessary to remove the sole panels in front of the settee and nav station which meant taking out all the bilge and battery covers as well as removing the settee itself. It isnt as hard as it sounds, despite cuts, bruises and curses. The copper foil is for the SSB.

The original tank is aluminum, which I opted to replace in plastic. However, the original manufacturer will make up a new aluminum one in heavier guage and with a better protective coating, so it is also an option.

This is the welded-up plastic tank from Triple-M Plastics which, while it took six months to get, was worth the wait. Here it is upside down. You can see the pick-up tube for the pump out.

This shot is of Marlyn, the Admiral, cleaning out the area. Interestingly, the aluminum tank had not leaked but was permiated enough to smell pretty good when in use. No smell when not. Hoses were good and time was short, so I used the originals. I re-installed a tank-full warning light which comes on when the tank is about 2/3 full.

Triple-M did a great job making up the new tank to Hunters specs. I used PVC pipe to connect with banded joints purchased at Home Depot. Works like a champ. Very satisfied with the replacement and a worthwhile project youll have to do sometime. Of course, I no sooner had the floors and furniture back in place and the Macerator packed up and had to be replaced since I broke the housing reassembling it. At least I have spare parts for the replacement!
