40.5 Refrigerator/Freezer Drain Problem

posted 10-07-2008 by Rich Stidger

I have had a problem with the refer and freezer draining into the area under the galley sink cabinate. The drainage does not drain out completely and develops odor that is real nasty.

I found that the floor section easily comes up with only 6-7 screws. The compartment can easily be reached and cleaned.

The drain hose from the refer was just laying in this compartment. This photo shows the hose as it was found and the area cleaned. Note the drain hole on the right that goes to the lower bilges in the keel.

Drain Hose Mis-placed

To correct this problem, I simply inserted the drain hose into the hole to the lower bilge. I believe that this is the way that Hunter intended it to be routed, and it was just mis-routed at the factory.

Certainly you would want to flush out the main bilge every so often to keep it clean. For me this simply means running a short hose from my seawater faucet at the galley into the bilge and letting it run for a while and having the bilge pump remove the water. Also this gives a check that the bilge pump/float switch is completely functional.
