Windlass improvement

posted 12-27-2012 by Hector Arrillaga

The windlass on our boat didnt have the lever that puts pressure on the chain to keep it on the gypsy while picking up the anchor, this was very uncomfortable and inconvenient. After observing other windlasses and looking at the available parts we came with this simple solution.

You need:

Self tailing cleat – WM Model 261156
5/16 screw, locking nut and one washer
Transom Gudgeon – WM Model 259427
Torsion Spring MSC 00043984 (I used a right hand spring but I think the left one 00043869 is probably better)

Remove the support rib of the cleat until it end up a flat piece of nylon. Trim the “tail” around the hole closest to the edge. You can use a regular hand saw for that. Sand lightly to get a nice finish.

I drill some holes to put the spring legs all the way trough the gudgeon and the cleat and trim the excess with a Dremel rotary tool.

Assembly is pretty straightforward, be careful to align the mounting screws to the right height so that it goes right into the middle of the gypsy an is leveled with it.

This works perfect for raising the chain, it gets tangled while in reverse, you do not want to do that without a chain or anchoring rope guide.
