Companionway Doors for a H380

posted 10-07-2008 by Les Blackwell

I bought these doors from Cruising Concepts and installed them myself. This is how they look from the cockpit. On the sliding hatch top is a canvas drop cloth with a window that covers the doors in inclement weather and for winter.

Each door can be pulled off of its hinge for maintenance or whatever. Also the plastic windows can be removed to allow air to pass below. There are screens already installed.

Companionway Doors closed

This allows you to see how the doors look when open. I havent yet decided how to fix the doors so they stay open while sailing. At present Im using shock cord--not very elegant.

Doors wide open

This close-up of the one door shows how the plastic window slides in and out of its frame.

More detail on the door construction.

Im not sure this is of much help but it does show the hinge section of a door. As Ive already mentioned, you can remove the doors off their hinges for maintanence or for the winter season.

A closer look at the hinge section

You can see I am not a carpenter by any means. I installed the main support piece and then had to sand the door section round so it would easily close. Trust me, you cant see it from an airplane.

Looking down at the door from the top

This gives some idea of how the hinge section looks from the top when the door is closed.

Another look from the top when door is closed

This is looking out through the closed doors. We asked for clear plastic rather than the smoked ones as we wanted light. I dont think people can see in from the dock anyhow. I would recommend for this model Hunter the lighter plastic windows.

Life in the cockpit through closed doors

Were pleased with the doors and for this season, we have removed the original plastic slides that came with the boat. They still can be used without removing the doors if you wanted to.

The new doors make it easier to shove the cats below when approaching a docking episode and just close the doors and pull the hatch. Otherwise, they would want to help out on the dock side of things.

One more look at the completed project.
