Windlass and bow roller installation

posted 05-05-2011 by Renasci

It started innocently enough, I wanted to add a windlass. That meant taking the locker lid home and spending lots of hours with glass and gel coat. Then built new support and glassed everything in, then slopped on some gel coat. Then I had to replace the bow roller when I learned that you cant swap sides and the chain gypsy is always on the starboard side. Oh well, the starboard roller was undersized anyway. So, I unbolted everything. It gave me a chance to tear out everything in the V berth and put backing plates on everything when things were bolted down. Because the new roller was longer, I was able to add two bolts to the top of rollers making it a total of five from top and the original four from the front, all with backing plates. I took pin supplied and drilled a hole in the end that didnt already have one, and used a ring-ding to secure the other end. After trying every swivel make, I ended up having to grind on the anchor. Now, it works really really well.
