Ports, painting, and sealing

posted 10-07-2008 by John Peskin

starting off with an awful blue non-skid, leaky and cracked ports and leaks from hardware on the deck as well

starting from pretty bad

To make a long story short, the previous owner cut the cutouts for the ports bigger than they should have been--no idea why. The point is that I needed to be sure the new ports would not leak so I had to downsize the cutouts by plugging them with plywood and then cutting out new cutouts from the plywood. The dripping that you see coming down the ports is from the penetrating epoxy that I saturated what was left of the inner core with. Step 1 was taking out the plastic ports. Step two was damage control, penetrate epoxied what was left inside. Step three, used filler epoxy to regain an edge for the old cutouts. Step 4 was make plugs and glass them in. Thats where Im at here

plugging ports

Here is a close-up of a plug that has not been fared. At this point I fared all the plugs so that the plugs and the cabin trunk would be flush. Then I cut out the proper size cutouts for the new Hood Stainless Steel ports that I investeed in.

Here you see the new paint job. I used Interlux Toplac. I would give them a so so review. Some parts came out fantastic, and some came out flat. I think I had a bad can, or put in on too thick. You can also see that I still need to cut the edge of the 5200 off the squeezed out. Overall, Im happy. Step 5 or 6 (I forget) well say 6: Generously used 5200 to install new ports. In between, I took off all the hardware on the deck, drilled the holes bigger, glassed in half-inch dowels, and still have to re-set everything.

SS ports in

A Good shot of the relatively completed project. Dorades and some hardware still have to go on, made a mess on the front hatch, but overall Im a pretty happy man.

Other sails are being repaired so I only flew the drifter this past Friday and Sat. I picked up this drifter on the HOW site for $270. Not bad at all. Take care everyone, and Id love to talk about this project in more detail if anyone wants too
