HC37 Rudder Position Indicator

posted 10-07-2008 by Jeff LeSage

I built this simple rudder position indicator for my 1979 37 cutter to help position the rudder when backing out of the slip. It was quick and easy to make and mounts where the Emergency tiller would connect.

I cut a short section of 1 1/2 PVC pipe so that with the slot cut in it will fit the Emergency tiller fitting and just under the access port.
The length of the PVC pipe may vary between boat models. I then glued on a pointer that I make from a PVC For Sale sign from the hardware store and painted it with some day glow paint.

I replaced the Emergency tiller access port cover with a clear cover. Beckson clear covers will fit the factory ring.

This device also lets you monitor the wobble in the rudder shaft bearing.
