37-c mast step

posted 10-07-2008 by Richard Shelby

This is what the step looked like after removal and wire-brushing. The joint between the mast base (photo 2) and the step was so oxidized that it was lifting the boat 2-3 inches without budging. We unbolted the two keel bolts, lifted it slightly and beat the step off with a sledge hammer and a 2x4.

The base of the mast before cleanup. After 30 minutes with a wire brush and a side-grinder it looked pretty good. I did not cut any off, nor raise the step, etc. Notice the wiring channel. It will hold at least 2x14-3 wires plus a RG8U VHF wire.

The refinished step in pace. Refinished with a coat of polester resin and polyurethane paint. Maybe next time it will be easier to remove.
