Getting ready for a new holding tank

posted 10-07-2008 by Morrie Frappier

My partner and I are living on the boat, sleeping in the V-berth and we were in the middle of a big anchor locker expansion project when we thought the next project on our list: a new holding tank under the V-berth. We decided there was no sense in creating all the dust involved in cutting fiberglass (essentially in our bed) two separate times. This first picture show where we marked out the biggest hole we could possibly get.

Line for cutout

Pretty good sized hole huh? At this point we didnt know what tank we were going to use. The are no transducers or anything else in the way in the bottom of this locker so our plan was to squeez the biggest tank possible in here.

The hole

We needed to put this all back together and sleep on the V-berth the same day we did this. We used 1 X 4 strips of hard wood (to be coated with epoxy later). They were glued to the underside of the opening with Gorilla Glue, screwed in from the top with SS wood screws. If you havent discovered Gorilla glue yet check it out at www.gorillaglue.com

Getting ready to fix the hole

The cut-out just sits down in there like its suppose to. After this we put the locker lid on, put the mattress in and went to bed (with a lot of work with the shop-vac thrown in there somewhere). Since then whe figured out the biggest possibe Ronco tank the would fit (# B223) and now have it stored down in the locker. The cut-out just comes on and off like a big lid. Ill post more pictures after the plumbing is complete.

Looks good as new
