H35.5 Aft Bulkhead Opening

posted 10-07-2008 by Jim Rushing

See Cutting Bulkhead

A 3/8 plywood template is used to guide the router. The router depth is set to just cut through the bulkhead plywood. The holding tank is against the bulkhead and a saw will cut into it. The critical dimensions are the top and bottom of the cutout. The cutout is 27 inches wide and 14 inches high. The width can be increased, but the height is critical. There is a fiber glass pan on the bottom side and a locker floor support on the top.

The tank is right against the bulkhead. Wiring is for the Snake River Metal Tank sending unit. Note black engine exhaust hose on the left side. Small black hose just behind and above tank is the two fuel lines going to and from the fuel tank.

See Finished opening

Teak strips to cover bulkhead splice have been re-installed.

See Port cockpit locker

Tank vertically viewed from the port locker. Area where you would like to extend tank into, but it isnt flat. This is why some people are building a shelf to hold a new tank up higher.

See Finished project

The cover is held in place with screws. Back side of cover has a thin gasket to seal opening. Teak trim matches trim on head cabinets.

See New cover

Replaced original cutout piece with a new piece of plywood with white finish.
