Preventer

posted 09-12-2008 by lyle hanna

I use a 1/2 line with 2 snatch blocks on my Hunter 35.5. The line is clipped onto the sliding padeye closest to the traveller. From there I run it to the toe rail (snatch block), then to the base of the mast (snatch block) and to a line clutch in the cockpit. This enables me to release the preventer without having to leave the cockpit. However when you gybe the main the snatch block attached to the toerail must be rerigged on the other side. I leave the preventer setup on the boom at all times and find it is easy to quickly attach the snatch block to the toerail when the preventer is required.
