I have added a check valve to the bilge outlet to prevent backwash and also keep the automatic feature from burning out. It works fine. I think it is OK to have a check valve on outlets that are above the waterline. The recommendations for not using check valves are for preventing backflow from outlets below the waterline. It seems the lesser of two evils is to make sure your automatic bilge system keeps working.
