Galley and Vberth Renos

posted 06-03-2015 by Ian Dennis

Ive been busy over the last winter. The galley and settee were looking a bit tired and I thought the layout and storage needed some improvements. I also managed to extend the Vberth by a foot to make it more comfortable for 2. Buffed up the vanity as well, made the side cupboards deeper and taller with new lexan and refinished the sole.....speaking of which, can be redone using an orbital sander with 100grit sandpaper and light pressure. It actually came up quite well and will do until I have enough time and money to replace it completely. I have four coats and counting of Minwax spar varnish applied(no stain) Thanks to the help of my friend, who is a joiner by trade, I fitted the new galley and table with teak fiddles, new counter top, galley sink and 3 new good sized drawers where the old double sink was. Finished with a reddish stain(Minwax Gunstock) and 4 coats of Minwax Spar varnish, gloss...so far. Ive ripped out the carpet from most of the boat, just the rear state room left. It was really filthy and smelled bad. No amount of cleaning could get the job done. I had to spend 8 hours with a stiff wheel brush and a grinder to get the glue off. In the Vberth and vanity I laid up a layer of laminated glass mat and cloth that looks really good when tinted cream. I intend to insulate this part in the future to reduce condensation but of now it will serve as is. In the saloon sides I laid a layer of glass mat with white gelcoat mixed in with the resin to make a smoother surface. It is a bit rough and I wish now that I had used the laminate glass here as well. Live and learn.
