H34 Bottom, Hull and Rudder Refurb

posted 10-07-2008 by Jerry Keto

This is the first in the series of photos of the finished job! In 3 weeks I did the following:
1) Chased all rust on the keel (used a needle scaler), primed, faired, primed and painted (1 solid week on the keel)!
2) Scraped and painted hull (about 12 very small blistered repaired)
3) Raised waterline to top of factory boot top
4) Painted new boot top using Interlux Brightside (blue and red) and 3M Fineline tape
5) Removed old decal under toe rail, sanded blue gelcoat, painted with Interlux Brightside (blue and red)
6) Port side of rudder was about 80% delaminated. Drilled about 2 dozen holes, drained and dried for 1 week, filled with West system epoxy and clamped till dry, faired holes that did not fill completely, sanded, primed and bottom painted.

I was quoted about $7000 to $8000 for this work and did it myself for under $1000 in materials and yard fees.

3 Week Turnaround

Like living in a treehouse!

The factory boot top was too low for fresh water

The zincs are 3 years old and barely degraded?

She compounded before anything was done on the hull. Used a non-wax containing compound so as not affect painting later. After 3 days of paint curing she did a great job waxing the hull. Around the new stripes she waxed by hand so as not to disturb new paint.

A great helper!

The secret to a crisp edge on the boot top stripes are using high quality tape. The 3M Fineline is the best avilable at about $20 a roll.

New boot top

This side of the rudder was almost completely delaminated but the core material (foam?) was intact. Used about 3 caulking tube blanks filled with West System epoxy.
