Hunter 34 Table Modifications

posted 10-07-2008 by Gary A.

This is the new table I made for my 1983 Hunter 34. I felt the original table was too large, especially since there are rarely more than two of us eating on the boat. The original table also made it difficult to get to items stored along the starboard shelves. This configuration gives us plenty of table space for two, and opens up a good bit of floor space between the dinette benches. As you can see, the table is made of two identical sections, joined with a piano hinge. I may replace that with proper table hinges at some point, but this was a quick solution.

Two Person Option

This photo shows the table opened up to full width. As you can see, the two sections that were resting on top of each other now have been opened (like a book) to double the table surface. With the table open like this, we can also drop it down and fill in the gap with the seat back cushions to make the normal double berth this dinette was designed for. In this photo, you will see a temporary leg made from 1 dowel and the original metal tube support leg. As I mentioned earlier, I need to make a nicer set of legs (I suppose most of us could use a nicer set of legs!). Sounds like a good winter project. I made this from scratch out of oak plywood rather than cutting up the original table. The original one is in my garage, in case the eventual next owner of my boat prefers the stock configuration.
