Unfortunate discovery at the masthead

posted 10-07-2008 by Bill Thiers

I bought Someday Lady (my name for her) a year ago from the second owner. Shes a 1983 Hunter 34. Enjoying her immensely, including the many little things that need doing--more on this in a moment. But first, some techincal details for anyone interested. This is a shot I took on my first trip up the mast a couple of days ago. Camera is an Olympus D640 edited in Paint Shop Pro. You can see my salty dog Miss T. sleeping next to the dock post in upper right. The trip up the mast was accomplished using climbing gear (ascenders on the main halyard, climbers Klemheist knot on the spinnaker halyard for safety line) purchased along with training from a local Wilderness Outfitters store. Been part way up the mast practicing many times, since I have no experience climbing. But the pro at WO was very helpful in assuring me what tools

Ive converted this photo to Black and White, and tweeked the brightness to show what I found, to wit: the main halyard (from which I am suspended!) and the Dutchman topping lift line are help up by a very small shackle that goes thru a hole drilled into the sheet aluminum (?) frame for the backstay. You may also be able to see what appears to be the frayed end of the original main halyard coming out of a pulley wheel in the masthead, next to a small diameter pennant halyard doing same. My aim is not too good, the top of the shackle in question being cut off. In my defense, I was anxious not to hang around up there too long after seeing the arrangement. Anyone have experience re-feeding a halyard inside a mast? Appreciate advice at bgthiers@earthlink.net. Thanks all!
