Oil Pressure

posted 10-07-2008 by Colin Nielsen

Being a rather obsessive compulsive person, I want to make sure all is well with my engine (Yanmar 3GM30F) whenever Im running it and idot lights and buzzers alone just dont cut it in my books. I bought new guages to match the fuel guage together with senders so that I now have redundant monitoring of cooling water temperature and oil pressure (the idot lights still work).

Location of new guages

When we bought the boat in 1999 (its a 1995 336), the VHF radio had been installed below and to the left of the Autohelm (where it was very difficult to get at). The Yanmar Instrument panel contained an Hour Meter just right of the Tachometer and the Buzzer unit was hanging down inside the binnacle. I moved the VHF up and to the left of the Autohelm and had a PVC Bezel made up to fit the hole where the VHF was located and installed the Hour Meter and Buzzer there (neither need to be within easy sight). I then installed the new Oil Pressure Guage where the hour meter had been and drilled a hole next to the Fuel Guage for the Water Temp. Fortunately, there were unused wires in the harness between the Instrument Panel and the engine, so there was no need to run new wiring (Yanmar provides wiring in the harness for an alarm for engines with a sail leg, which Hunter does not use). I now have the peace of mind of a buzzer and light as well as a guage for these two important functions.
