Windlass Installation

posted 10-07-2008 by Colin Nielson

I ran very heavy guage cables direct to the house batteries and locked the circuit breaker and control box in the upper corner of the starboard cockpit locker.

This photo shows the location of the Lofrans Windlass on the foredeck. The anchor locker was too shallow to mount the windlass inside, so I mounted it on the deck. A piece of formed fiberglass was installed on the top of the deck and a piece of plywood was bonded to the deck inside so that the deck is sandwiched between them. This resulted in a very strong installation.

The Lofrans fit very nicely through the deck, without extending too far inside (which was one reason is chose a Lofrans). A hole was cut in the liner so that the windlass would be anchored directly to the deck. The gap between the headline and the deck made wiring relatively easy. Next project - build a vented teck box to cover the motor.
