Drawers size lessons learned #1

posted 07-28-2011 by Sylvain

I few months ago, I decided to increase the size of the drawers as suggested by Dale Baker in this forum.

This post is to show the way I did it and what Ive learned.

First, my intent was to build a frame that would support the sliders instead of using the plywood support already in place. I took out the teak plywood face piece and saved all the teak 1x1 (some of it is mahogany) used as braces. Theres a lot of useable pieces for making trims later.

I got the full extension sliders (12, 16 and 20 in) from Woodcraft; they were on sale.

I built new drawers (rabbet joints) out of half inch maple plywood I had recycled years ago. I had almost enough to make the three drawers. I ended buying a quarter of a sheet of poplar plywood from Home Depot to complete it all. For the bottom, I used Virola plywood and it is a hardwood ply and stains favorably. I saved the original bottoms as Hunter used left over Teak and Holly plywood. This will become quite useful if I need to replace part of the cabin sole.

Note: I should have built the drawers narrower to give clearance for the slider hardware instead of using the original width and routing out slots as suggested by Dale. It worked but any chipping and it would have showed as the solid teak face is only so wide. It would have saved a lot of time if I would have simply aligning the frame on the existing cut out.

The frame is built out of some old clear spruce I had and cut to 2x2. The joints are also rabbeted using a dado blade, glued and screwed. After dry fitting, the two frames were glued and back screwed on the face plywood piece.
The frame is braced for rigidity and anchor points once installed on the boat.

As it turned out, I couldnt slide the plywood face back in position on the boat without removing the head door and frame. I had to drill out some brass screws in the process but it wasnt too bad of a job. Once all clear, the frame was put in place and using pre-drilled oak 1x1, it was secured solidly.

I have measurements on the photos.

Its quite an improvement in size from the original drawers. Thanks to Dale for the idea.
