Anchor roller

posted 07-28-2011 by Sylvain

As much as I planned a more elaborate bowsprit like David Underwoods, I made one long enough to support the anchor roller without adding too much stress from a 35 Lbs Manson Supreme anchor.

I laminated mahogany using Gorilla glue in strips 1.25 in wide and after planing and sanding down to 1 in, I cut and rounded a hole for the bow fitting.

I warmed up the plank in a hot oven to get rid of any moisture and applied a first coat of epoxy with special clear hardener while still warm followed by 3 more coats.

I got 1 inch 316 stainless (sanded and buffed) to edge the plank and to attach to the toe rail.

The plank is bedded in thicken epoxy with fiberglass fabric at the joints so to seal moisture penetration as much as possible. Its not coming out.

Prior to this, I had removed the original cap and had found a de-laminated bow. I cut the top later, fabric/filled/fabric etc to repair the area. I should have taken more photos but when my hands are dirty, I loose the artistic side.

I applied 4 coats of spar varnish before bolting the anchor roller down. It looks good and very solid. I used 3/8 bolts. I just need to repaint the deck in the immediate area.
