Breaker panel relocation

posted 04-15-2011 by Sylvain

I dont know what they were thinking but the breaker panel location on a Hunter 33 (1980) wasnt very good. It got worst when one of the previous owner of my boat added a compressor for the ice box and routed the pipes right beside the electrical panel. The result was a panel and wiring sitting in water from the condensation, a recipe for disaster.

The AC wiring was solid household type and a lot of the DC system had been spliced, doubled, cut, etc. I needed to redo all the wiring with marine grade tinned wire and at the same time relocate the breaker panel.

The most logical place I came up with was on the chart table close to the power source.

I built a box out of good quality maple (1/2) plywood I had recovered form an old desk and, on top, glued mahogany I had split and planed down.

While the breaker panel was out, I tinned the copper bus bars and replaced a few breaker. I added a dedicated push type breaker for the electric head.

Unlike some upgrades Ive seen where all wire are connected to bus bars / connectors and then to the panel, I decided to minimize the amount of connections so my cables, except for an extra DC negative bus bar, all go directly to the panel.

The two toggle switches are for the mast tricolor (red) and the bow / stern navigation lights (green).

It works very well.
