Head Remote

posted 10-07-2008 by Dale E. Baker

Every time you go sailing, you start by standing on your head in the starboard locker to turn the head thru-hull on, crawling into the quarter berth to turn the engine thru-hull on, and forget about the galley sink thru-hull.

Along with a major renovation of my head (no I havent been seeing a psychiatrist) I installed my first remote. The wall behind the head is removed, making the project much easier.

The wood knob is the remote with the thru-hull in the closed position.

You know the drill.

Here the thru-hull is in the open position

The first thing I did was loosen and rotate the thru-hull so the lever aligned fore and aft with the closed position aft.

Of course, that also involved removing the thru-hull from the hull and re-bedding it.

The Thru-Hull Closed

OK, the details.
Total cost, less than $10 at Home Depot.

Theres all kinds of ways to do this, but heres what I did.

-I removed the lever from the thru-hull and drilled the hole in the end out to 3/8.
-I cut a 3/8 SS bolt to length, with a washer on each side of the lever.
-The white elbow is a 90deg connector for PEX tubing, press the bolt in, and its trapped. Can be removed, but its a bit of work.
-Finally, 3/8 aluminum rod. Started life 36 long. A wooden knob was drilled out and press fitted over the end of the rod to dress it up. The other end trapped in the PEX fitting.

The rod travels about 5, so make sure you have clearance where it will come out. Drill a hole behind the head a little over sized, and start connecting the parts.

Now, no more standing on my head in the cockpit locker. Next: The engine thru-hull.
