Radar Installation

posted 10-07-2008 by Steve Weinstein

I opted for a Garhauer Pole mount to install my new JRC1500MKII Radar. The most logical place was on the transom. You can see the Thru-Deck Cable fitting next to the pole mounting base which routes the scanner cable into the boat

Transom Mount

I found that the supplied Rail Mount secured the pole strongly enough that no other supports were necesary. The standoff pole which fits into the clamp on thingy on the radar pole comes about 6 long so I had to cut it down to about 2-1/2 so the pole was secured absolutely vertical. No big deal with a tube cutter.

Since I mounted the radar display at the helm in a NavPod I ran the cables (1 for the scanner cable and 1 for the power supply cable)through the 1 stainless pedestal guard and down through the deck. To help insure watertightness I inserted a 3/4 PVC tube, about 6 long to act as a chase for the cables. Its hard to describe so I drew this sketch to illustrate it. If water gets into the pedestal guard feet it has to climb up at least a few inches until it has access to drip belowdeck.

Ive also got the other sailing instument cabling coming down through the guard with the radar power cable but you can see here where they all exit that PVC chase and go on their way to various breakers or transducers (wind, depth, speed. Just in front of the steering idler wheel on the right you can see the scanner cable coming out of PVC. That PVC is a longer tube since I wanted that cable lower to clear other hoses and stuff.

Heres a closer look at the scanner cable coming out of the guard sleeve. That C clamp in the foreground is a cable brake on the throttle cable to prevent throttle slippage.

Scanner cable

I I had to cut the scanner cable since theres no way an 1-1/4 plug fits through a 1 pedestal guard. The easiest way to reconnect everything was with a terminal strip which I place all the way aft on the engine box cabinetry. Right in front of that removable bulkhead. The scanner cable has 11 wires including all the shields and so forth. I initially tried using phono plugs for two shielded wires but even though you see them in the photo they didnt work. So I just added a small 4 gang terminal strip below the existing ones and connecte the two wires and two shields with crimp on spade connectors like the other cables. When everything was tightned I check the radar operation to make sure I continuity with all the wires. Afterwards I covered these terminal strips with a protective plastic cover.
