H - 33 - Adding A-C Outlets

posted 10-07-2008 by Sam Lust

There has been some discussion lately about adding outlets to the Hunter 33. I just finished up adding a few and figured Id post the results.

My 1983 came with 3 A-C outlets run off one breaker/switch. I split off port and starboard onto separate circuits during my electrical panel move, which will be the subject of a post real, real soon.

The Galley outlet is the junction point for the port side. The feed comes up to it and splits off to the locker outlet forward. Being lazy I retained the standard size steel box and crammed the new wiring in. I tapped off here and ran #14 tinned marine wire up along the hull joint bolts and back to a plastic Wiremold box fixed to the partial bulkhead at the quarterberth.

Visible here is the Wiremold mounting bracket with the new wire coming through a 5/8 hole drilled in the wood. I used surface mount so I could get it out of the way yet not have to cut a big hole through the tabbing.

A quality outlet and stainless cover plate finish it off. And of course a cord running to a work light.

On the starboard side the starting point was the outlet in the head. Wire again run up along the hull to deck joint. Wiremold box mounted to the liner trim flare. Same stainless cover plate.

This one is a plastic new work box cut into the bulkhead, placed very carefully so it doesnt cut through any tabbing, and wont interfere with hanging items in the locker or the stereo speaker hidden up inside the locker. Oops, I quess its not secret any more. (The subject of yet another post yet to happen.)

The addition of three new outlets makes winter projects lots easier with less extension cords forming a web to trip over.
