Cabin door hardware replacement

posted 10-07-2008 by Terry Arnold

On my 79 H33 the hardware above, Kwikset brand had broken both in the head and in the door to the forward cabin. In looking for replacements, I discovered some hardware that looks so good and is so economical that I figured it worth sharing. If your hardware is as above and if the original door is about 1 thick, then the replacement hardware should fit your boat too.

Original door hardware

This hardware is from Red Hills General Store, an on line operation, (http://www.redhillgeneralstore.com/) and is listed in their Building Construction dept as Ives Storm door latch, bright brass. I have been very impressed with the quality of the hardware. The finish is much better than the original, solid brass, highly polished. The latch hole and the 1 3/4 backset of the knobs is identical to the original so the hardware fits right in except for one significant problem. The orginal equipment inside and outside escutcheons were through bolted together as is the custom with Kwikset hardware while the replacement hardware escutcheons are screwed into the door individually. Thus, the original two holes drilled in the door for the throughscrews need to be filled to provide purchase for the replacement hardware woodscrews. I used thickened epoxy as the escutcheons essentially cover all of it. plugs of teak could be used as well.

Replacement Hardware

Although not visible in the photo, there is a privacy lever that prevents the knob from turning from the cabin side.

Privacy side

The cost of this hardware is probably a quarter of that sold by the marine outlets while being higher quality than anything Ive seen. I have had it about a year so I just checked with the web site and the hardware, as of 11/01 is still listed.
